Seven writers James Kelman, Khaled Hosseini, Carolyn See, Al Young, Andrew Lam, James D. Houston, and the current Booker Prize winner, Kiran Desai (who is at this writing only probable) will be brought to 91 this semester by the Center for Literary Arts. Each will come to a special closed seminar to discuss his or her work with students, and each will give a public reading at the indicated venue. In addition, Kelman, Hosseini, See and Desai (conditional on her visit to 91) will also appear in public conversations with the instructor, after which they will take questions from the public. Readings (italics = mandatory readings) James Kelman: Busted Scotch and How Late it Was, How Late [plus optional books] Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner Carolyn See: There Will Never be Another You [plus optional books] Andrew Lam: Perfume Dreams James D. Houston: Bird of Another Heaven Al Young: [To be announced] Kiran Desai: The Inheritance of Loss (this is only required if she commits to appear) [plus optional book, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard] In addition to the required readings, students will select two optional books from among those mentioned in brackets above. Each student will make a presentation to class based on a five-page paper on each chosen recommended work (most likely we will put together panels to discuss the more popular works). Schedule of papers to be determined after students choose optional books. Students will discuss each writers work during the classes before his or her appearance, as specifically noted on the class schedule (please bring each text under discussion to the class for which it is scheduled); in addition, students will bring copes for the entire class of a typed list of eight questions based on what they have learned about the writers life and work, and circulate these questions to all class members for discussion during the class immediately before the writers appearance. Students will also write a double-spaced critical response paper for each of the authors listed above of 2-3 pp. to the on-campus events featuring the above-mentioned writers brought to campus by the Center for Literary Arts this semester. Each such short paper must cover an event that takes place outside of this classroom, but may also incorporate discussion of the authors classroom visit. Author schedules may be altered during the semester. It the students responsibility to get the information from updated versions of this syllabus which will be posted on the web at HYPERLINK "http://www.mitchberman.com/139-Spring07.htm" www.mitchberman.com/139-Spring07.htm. Information on public author events is updated regularly at the Center for Literary Arts website HYPERLINK "http://www.litart.org/" www.litart.org. Rules, regulations and one unexpected freedom: Because of the unique nature of the class, it is essential that all students plan on attending each class. In particular, students may not miss any of the scheduled author visits, and should review their schedules prior to registration to insure that they are clear on these critical dates. Some of these dates take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays rather than Thursdays. Times and locations to be announced. A quiz is given at the beginning of each class for which an assigned reading listed for that day; these quizzes, if missed, may not be made up. It is essential to be in class on time in order to take the quizzes Class continues until the last minute scheduled Students may not doze, nod off, drift, sleep, snore or subsist in a lifelike semi-comatose condition in the classroom No computers and no text-messaging in the classroom Cell phones and beepers which deliver competing audio in the classroom will be instantly incinerated by flame-thrower Students may drink and eat (no eating in the presence of guest authors, unless students bring in enough snacks to supply the class and guest author) in the classroom, so long as they do so discreetly and clean up after themselves. The Department of English mandates that all greensheets shall include the following statement: The Department of English reaffirms its commitment to the differential grading scale as defined in the 91 Catalog (The Grading System). Grades issued must represent a full range of student performance: A= excellent; B= above average; C= average; D= below average; F= failure. Courses graded according to the A, B, C, No Credit system shall follow the same pattern, except that NC shall replace D or F. In such cases, NC shall also substitute for W (or Withdrawal) because neither grade (NC or W) affects students GPA. Course Schedule Normal text = readings; Caps = lecture/discussion topics; boldface = assignments; BOLD CAPS = author appearances on campus.
