James Office: Faculty Offices Bldg 219 Section: 1 Phone: (408) 924-5089 Classroom: HGH 227 Class: M/W 1500-1615 Office Hours: 1030-noon and by appointment Course Description: This course focuses on the elements and craft of fiction. Through reading and analyzing published works from prominent authors, you will learn to read as writers rather than critics. Youll then turn your attention to the crafting and revision of original short stories for in-class workshop. Learning Goals Ability to read literature from a writers perspective Exposure to various forms of fiction and the methods used to create them Ability to generate new creative work under deadline Ability to revise original work Ability to offer constructive criticism of peer work Required Texts: Course Reader, available at Maple Leaf Press Additional Handouts as given in class. Reed Magazine Peer Stories (Each student must provide copies of stories for workshop) Assignments: Two original works of fiction, photocopied for class. Written commentary on peer stories. Verbal participation in workshop. Short writing assignments as directed Attendance at one literary reading of your choice, with a 1-page response Grades: Grades will be based on the quality and quantity of writing you do as well as the quality and constructiveness of the criticism offered during the workshops. Some of you may have some natural ability writing fiction, and some may not. Think of talent as extra credit it can make up for a blown quiz, but it wont get you an A If you neglect the other class requirements. Creative writing, though subject to the instructors individual subjectivity, can be evaluated according to general standards used to determine how well a piece of writing works. These standards include: textual and/or technical competence and eloquence; imaginative risk; energy and freshness of language; effective use of metaphor and figurative language; clarity and precision of detail; capacity for mixed feelings and uncertainty; effective use of grammar, syntax, and rhythm; naturalness and believability; appropriateness of style to subject; and compelling interest. Final grades: Original short stories plus revision 40% Class Participation (oral and written) 25% Literary Event 10% Additional Writing Assignments 10% Class Readings/Discussions 15% 91 Grading Policy: The Department of English reaffirms its commitment to the differential grading scale as defined in the 91 Catalog (The Grading System). Grades issued must represent a full range of student performance: A=excellent; B=above average; C=average; D=below average; F=failure. In English Department courses, instructors will comment on and grade the quality of writing as well as the quality of ideas being conveyed. Student writing should be distinguished by correct grammar and punctuation, appropriate diction and syntax, and well-organized paragraphs. Late Assignment Policy I do not accept late assignments. All stories must be turned in on time for the workshop to succeed. Failure to turn in an assignment on time, or to attend a class session when your piece is up for discussion, will result in a 0 for that assignment.
