You are responsible for regularly checking with the messaging system through Desire to Learn. Course Description English 1B is the second course in 91s two-semester lower-division composition sequence. Beyond providing repeated practice in planning and executing essays, and broadening and deepening students understanding of the genres, audiences, and purposes of college writing, English 1B differs from English 1A in its emphasis on persuasive and critical writing (with less attention paid to the personal essay), its requirement for fewer but longer essays, and its introduction to writing informed by research. Students will develop sophistication in writing analytical, argumentative, and critical essays; a mature writing style appropriate to university discourse; reading abilities that will provide an adequate foundation for upper-division work; proficiency in basic library research skills and in writing papers informed by research; and mastery of the mechanics of writing. Prerequisites: Passage of Written Communication 1A (C or better) or approved equivalent. Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives Building on the college-level proficiencies required in English 1A, students shall achieve the ability to write complete essays that demonstrate advanced proficiency in all of the following: Clear and effective communication of meaning. An identifiable focus (argumentative essays will state their thesis clearly and will show an awareness, implied or stated, of some opposing point of view). An appropriate voice that demonstrates an awareness of audience and purpose. Careful attention to review and revision. Effective and correct use of supporting materials, including independent research (e.g., quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, and citing sources); Effective analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and synthesis of ideas encountered in multiple readings. Effective organization and development of ideas at paragraph and essay levels. Appropriate and effective sentence structure and diction. Command of conventional mechanics (e.g., punctuation, spelling, reference, agreement). Student Learning Objectives: SLO 1: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to refine the competencies established in Written Communication 1A. SLO 2: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to use (locate, analyze, and evaluate) supporting materials, including independent library research, and identify key concepts and terms that describe the information needed. SLO 3: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to select efficient and effective approaches for accessing information utilizing an appropriate investigative method or information retrieval system. SLO 4: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to synthesize ideas encountered in multiple readings. SLO 5: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to incorporate principles of design and communication to construct effective arguments. SLO 6: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to identify and discuss issues related to censorship and freedom of speech. Information available online You are responsible for reading the following information online at HYPERLINK "http://www.sjsu.edu/english/comp/policyforsyllabi.html" http://www.sjsu.edu/english/comp/policyforsyllabi.html Course guidelines Academic policies (academic integrity, plagiarism, ADA and DRC policies) Adding and dropping classes Required Texts/Readings Textbook Compose Design Advocate Wysocki & Lynch ISBN:03211117786 Other equipment / material requirements (optional) Composition Notebook (without spiral-binding) Regular access to Internet and Desire to Learn Portable Memory Drive Pearsons Making the Grade Program Classroom Protocol This is not a class full of lectures and note-taking. While I will occasionally provide a handout or instructions, the majority of learning will take place through writing, reading, and discussing with others. Therefore, consistent attendance is extremely important in this course. If you miss a class, you will likely miss important instructions vital to the course. Missing two or more classes may be grounds for me dropping you from the course. (Keep in mind that I am not required to drop you from the course if you stop attending; the ultimate responsibility lies with you. If you do not officially drop a course, you may accidentally end up on the final roster and I will be forced to give you an F.) Additionally, I expect respect and courtesy in the classroom. If you must arrive late, please do so quietly and without calling attention to yourself. Do not interrupt the class to ask what you have missed. Any behavior that distracts the learning environment will not be tolerated. You will be asked to leave the class if you engage in distracting behavior such as using your cell phone, sleeping, reading material not related to class, using the Internet to check Facebook, etc. Our class will become our own reading and writing community; it will become a place where we all feel comfortable taking risks, sharing ideas, and finding our own distinct voices as observers and writers. Thus, every students participation is essential to successful class discussions and writing activities. We will be posting both individual and group activities that will require 100% participation. If you have not posted by the specified deadline, you cannot earn credit on the activity assigned. No exceptions. Participation will account for 10% of your final grade. Reading Responses Regular reading responses will be required for this class. The purpose of these reading responses is to demonstrate your ability to carefully and critically read the materials of this class. Failure to turn in a reading response by the specified deadline will earn a zero (0). More directions for the reading responses will follow. Quizzes Quizzes may also be given for any of the readings. You will know about the quizzes in advance, and they will be open book. Quizzes are graded on a straight percentage and will count towards your reading response grade. You will earn a zero (0) if you fail to complete your quiz by the deadline. Freewrite Journalling This class will have freewrites, which will all be written in a composition notebook. The journal will be collected multiple times throughout the semester. Failure to turn in the journal by collection time will result in an automatic zero (0). More directions will follow. In other words, no informal assignments (readings responses, quizzes or journals) will be accepted late for any reason. Peer Workshops Peer workshops are opportunities to receive feedback from your peers to revise your essays. Constructive feedback will help you to see where writing has effectively engaged its audience and where it can by revised to become even more powerful. In addition, learning to critique the essays of your peers is one of the best ways to learn to revise your own drafts. Participation in these workshops is mandatory. Participation is graded on a point scale of 0-5 and further details will be provided. If you have not submitted a complete draft of your essay to be workshopped by the specified deadline, then your final essay grade will also be lowered by 10%. Participation is worth 10% of your final grade. Formal Assignments & Paper Policies All formal writing assignments are due at the time designated. Any assignments turned in after the deadline will earn a 10% grade reduction for every class day late until it has been received. You may always turn in an assignment early. However, if it is more than one class day early, I recommend talking with me first. In order to pass this course, all formal assignments must be completed. Failure to turn in a major assignment will result in an automatic F for the course. Despite our advancing technology in this modern age, computers crash and the internet connection goes down. Save yourself from a potential catastrophe by frequently saving your drafts on multiple mediums. DO NOT save over your files, but rather save each new draft with a different draft number and new date and/or time. I recommend using separate file folders for each essay. Make sure to give yourself buffer time in case of emergency. Final Assignment In this class, we will stress writing as a process that improves with time, effort, and substantial revision. Instead of a final exam, you will write a critical reflection at the end of the class. Think of it as a scientific study of your progress as a writer over the next four months. Remember, writing is a process. Collecting your work and then reflecting on that work is part of the process. The final assignment is designed to get you thinking about your specific challenges, your strategies for improvement, your successes and failures, and your goals for the future. Every writer, no matter how accomplished, has room for improvement. This assignment is your culminating experience. This course does not have a final exam. More instructions for the portfolio will follow. Course Calendar All major assignments will be listed in the course calendar. I reserve the right to make adjustments to the calendar as I deem necessary, but I will give you at least one weeks advanced notice. E-mail Etiquette I am happy to discuss questions with you during class or in office hours. I encourage you to e-mail me if you have any difficulties or if an emergency arises. Please note that I will check my email only once per day, Monday-Friday. We all have other commitments in our lives; please e-mail me as early as possible to ensure a timely response. Academic policies You are responsible for reading the 91 academic polices available online: http://www.sjsu.edu/english/comp/policyforsyllabi.html Plagiarism Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cheating on exams or plagiarism (presenting the work of another as your own, or the use of another persons ideas without giving proper credit) will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. If you would like to include your assignment or any material you have submitted, or plan to submit for another class, please note that 91s Academic Policy S07-2 requires approval of instructors. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development.
