Strategies for Success
Whether you are newly admitted, or a continuing student, we want to remind you that we are part of your team and are here to help you navigate your college journey. Here's some advice on surviving and thriving in college:
- Seek academic support resources early on
-
College is a new experience and comes with new terrains. For some, adapting to a new environment, a new academic course load, or academic rigor will present stressful times. If you feel overwhelmed, there are several people waiting to help you.
Our advisors love to hear how you are doing throughout the semester and want to share resources with you. Office hours are dedicated times that professors are waiting to meet and learn more about you. Additionally, tutors are waiting to connect and support students.
-
- Connect with other students and form study groups
-
Find other students with whom you connect, who understand your experience, and who genuinely care and will push you to do your best. Our Peer Advisors are current 91ÁÔÆæ students ready to support you.
-
- Be proactive about financial assistance
-
Every student has their own financial needs, and scholarships and grants can make a difference in maintaining financial stability throughout your college journey. It might be an added task; however, completing one simple application can pay off. Visit our Lurie College Financial Aid Opportunities webpage for more information.

-
Get involved with programs/organizations you identify with
-
Embrace the college experience and explore something new. Join a student organization you identify with - we have several right here in the Lurie College of Education. The college environment is about growing academically and preparing you for the workforce, and it is also a time to build new memories, a life-long support system, and an opportunity to connect with yourself and the community.

-
Build your support system
-
Does your support system include a professor or campus staff member? What about family and friends? Be open to having individuals who will provide guidance and connect you with academic and support services and resources you may need. Finding that circle of support does require effort on your part, but it will be worth it.
-
-
Believe in yourself, and don't give up
-
It takes time to adjust to a new environment, meet the right people, and make your home away from home. Don’t doubt your tenacity and resiliency. You have worked hard to be here. Look back and recognize your progress. Remember why you decided to start this journey and if you need help, connect with us - you are not alone.
