However, these address common problems seen in ME 115 lab reports. 1. Be specific. For example, say, The power for the second run was 3% lower than in the first run, rather than, The power for the second run was a little lower than in the first run. 2. Dont copy the procedure from the lab handout. Instead, explain what you did, and reference the lab handout for detailed instructions. 3. Include important equations in the main text of the report. Less important equations can be included in an appendix. 4. Include important data and results in the main body of the report in tables and/or figures. Additional raw data should be placed in an appendix. For example, if you took five temperature readings and used an average, all five temperature readings should be included in the appendix, but only the averaged one may need to be included in the text. 5. All figures and tables need to be referenced in the text. For example, Figure 1 illustrates how heat exchanger effectiveness increased with air flow rate. 6. Make sure to format figures and tables appropriately. Each figure must have a name and number (like Figure 1) and caption. Include units, where appropriate. Include a reasonable number of significant digits, consistent for each column for example, each number in column two has three significant digits, while each number in column one has two significant digits. Use reasonable scales on figures. For example, if your x data goes from 4 to 36, make your x axis go from 0 to 40, even though Excel may automatically make it go from -10 to 50, or something like that. If you only have one data set, do not include a figure legend. Include all data points on figures, not just a fitted line. If you have two data sets with curve-fitted lines, include two terms in your legend, not four. Excel will automatically include one for each data set and one for each line. Get rid of the ones for the lines. 7. Answer lab handout questions in paragraph form, not in a question-and-answer form. 8. Appendices must be properly formatted and easy to read. Include some text that explains whats there. 9. Make sure that your lab instructor can tell where your numbers came from. You may need to include some sample calculations in an appendix. 10. If written English is not your strong point, read your report out loud before turning it in.
