I hope your semester is going well and you are settling back into the vibrant 91猎奇 campus and community. This month, I want to bring your attention to our Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (RSCA) forums happening throughout the semester. We offer these forums as a way to showcase the fantastic work of our faculty and students while also providing a platform to connect faculty and students across disciplines.

This fall, we have three types of forums:
- RSCA Caf茅s: Thematically based gatherings designed to connect faculty around shared interests. Session 1 of our first caf茅 theme, Social Justice and Equity, was well attended and well received, with faculty from all but one college participating. We encourage you to attend the remaining sessions in this theme and/or join future sessions, such as our next session on Sustainable Futures and Human Health.

- RSCA in Five: Our flagship dissemination series returns this semester with Big Data and Data Science on October 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We currently have an exciting of 12 speakers! Our second talk in the series, Community Engaged RSCA, will take place on December 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This programming never fails to highlight the groundbreaking work of 91猎奇 faculty and we look forward to engaging with audience members from external partners this semester.

- Student RSCA Forums: We are excited to be partnering with the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, McNair Scholars, and Undergraduate Education for student-led RSCA panels on timely topics. To hear four accomplished students present their work on COVID-19鈥檚 Impact on Vulnerable Populations, join us on September 22 from 11:00 a.m. to Noon in person in Student Union meeting room 3B or via Zoom.

University Grants Academy (UGA) supports faculty members from across the campus through the process of writing a significant external grant proposal to fund their research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA).
Applications for the UGA are due October 24, 2022.

our first Fall 2022 RSCA in Five faculty short talk 鈥�&苍产蝉辫;
Big Data and Data Science! We live in the world of large and complex sets of data. The multidisciplinary field of data science explores new modes of data-driven discovery in many fields including health, the social sciences, science, and engineering.
This will be a hybrid event 鈥� hosted online via Zoom and in person at the 91猎奇 Student Union, Ballroom 3. Food will be served to ballroom attendees.

For Principal Investigators: A Four-Part RSCA Administration Training
Series 鈥� February 2023
Management of your personal RSCA enterprise at 91猎奇 can be complex and somewhat challenging. Beginning
February 2023, Research Development (RD), Research Compliance (RC) and the 91猎奇 Research Foundation Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) will offer a four-part workshop series that will equip you with the knowledge you will need to successfully navigate the process.
The series will include the following: (1) planning your lab or RSCA space and mentoring and hiring students, (2) contract negotiation, (3) compliance and ethical issues, and (4) managing your grant post award in compliance with applicable regulations. Complete all four virtual workshops to receive a certificate of completion and $500 added to your 91猎奇RF RSCA account.

Research Using Stem Cells
Research involving stem cells has tremendous innovative potential, but is governed by a confusing network of regulations.
At the federal level, it is important to note that federal funds may not be used, either by an awardee or a subrecipient, for research using human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines that are not listed on the . Furthermore, even if the hESCs are from an eligible source, researchers may not use federal funds for research that introduces any human stem cells into non-human primate blastocysts, or research that involves the breeding of animals where any introduced human stem cells may contribute to the germ line.
In California, human embryonic stem cells are regulated by the California Health and Safety Code, Section 125119(a)(1), which requires research involving the derivation or use of hESCs to be reviewed and approved by a stem cell research oversight committee.
In contrast, research involving human adult stem cells (e.g., mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, neural stem cells) or induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs, or human somatic cells that are capable of dividing without differentiation in culture) only requires review by the stem cell research oversight committee if the research is funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
Finally, it is important to know that research with non-human stem cells is exempt from the regulations discussed above, but still requires IACUC approval.
