From the Desk of Joanne Wright
Senior Associate Vice President, University Personnel

I have been thinking about President Teniente-Matson’s State of the University address in March and her plans to refocus on the campus mission, vision and values. I am excited about the opportunity to participate in this process and encourage each of you to do the same, in whatever way you are able. San José State is a community, and everyone has a voice in shaping the future.

This is one of my favorite times of year on campus, as students in caps and gowns begin to gather to celebrate the momentous achievement of graduating from college. Commencement ceremonies will be held for three days beginning May 24, and among the graduates will be some of our employees. I want to congratulate all of our graduates, but especially those who have worked full time while earning their degree. That is definitely something to celebrate!

As you know, the university doesn’t close for the summer but the population of the campus decreases and becomes a bit quieter. Summer is a wonderful time for vacation, and I encourage you to take time if you can - make sure to clear it with your manager first! Remember you can check your vacation balance online through 91 @ Work. Click the tile in (search: balance) to see your vacation or sick leave balance.

I hope you have a wonderful summer!

The Recruitment and Retention team is under the direction of Julie Paisant, Senior Director for the Office of Equal Opportunity, Employee Relations, and Recruitment and Retention. The unit is managed by Tony Garcia and the staff are focused on position management, staff and MPP recruiting, temporary appointments, classification and compensation, and department reorganizations. Let’s meet the team!

Tony Garcia (He, Him, His) - Manager, Recruitment and Retention - Tony manages the team and also conducts classification and compensation reviews for staff and MPPs. He has been in this role since the beginning of 2020 but has been in the department for 18 years! He began his UP career as a member of the front desk staff after working as a student assistant in the Computer Science department on campus. Something unique about Tony is that he has had many family members who have worked on campus, including both of his parents who retired from 91. Outside of work he loves getting together with family and friends to share a meal; it doesn't even have to be a special occasion!

Rosalina Calderon (She, Her, Hers) - Recruiting/OnBoarding Lead - Rosalina collaborates with her unit to support the campus community in the areas of recruitment, position management, temporary support and other personnel transactions. She has been in UP for 15 years and in this role for almost 13 of those. Rosalina said, “It feels like yesterday that Amanda greeted me at the front desk when I came in for my interview.” Something you may not know about Rosalina is that she lived in an adobe house as a child, one that was built by her parents in a remote part of Mexico. They bathed and washed in a nearby river, and everything they owned was made by her mother. They ate the crops they grew and the animals they raised. Rosalina loves going on hikes with her son to explore and also loves to read. She’s also a Libra!

Amanda Frank (She, Her, Hers) - Senior Recruiter - Amanda has been at 91 and in UP for 17 years! She’s been in her current role for approximately 4 1/2 years. She manages the full cycle of recruitments for staff and MPP vacancies, including all aspects of pre-boarding and onboarding. Something you may not know about Amanda is that she is a lifetime member of the Little People of America organization. Outside of work she loves to shop, travel and spend time with family and friends.

Jonathan Beene (He/Him) - Recruiter - Jonathan manages staff and MPP recruitments for the Student Wellness Center, Enrollment Management, the College of Science and several other departments. He has been employed on campus for almost a year but is also an 91 graduate. Go Spartans! Something you may not know about Jonathan is that he has had the pleasure of playing basketball in the Event Center on two occasions. Outside of work he enjoys coaching basketball and watching his daughter compete in AcroGymnastics.

Jessica Huerta Sousa (She, Her, Hers) - Recruiter - Jessica has been at 91 in her role as a staff and MPP recruiter for a little over a year, but she is a Spartan through and through as she completed her undergraduate degree at 91. Something unique about Jessica is that she runs for fun and has completed five half-marathons! Outside of work she enjoys playing with her toddler and trying new restaurants.

Steven Lee (He, Him) - Recruiter - Steven provides full-cycle recruiting services for staff, managers and student assistants. His position is unique in that it is 50% dedicated to University Housing. He also supports the College of Education, Student Success, Campus Life and other departments. Steven is also an 91 alum and graduated with a concentration in HR Management. He worked as a student assistant in one of the colleges then came back to campus to join UP in early 2021. Something you may not know about Steven is that he likes to cook. Specifically, he likes to smoke meat. In fact, his favorite Pixar movie is Ratatouille. Outside of work Steven likes researching new places to try with his wife and enjoys reading and writing food reviews. He plays golf to relieve stress and also enjoys spending time outside.

Hung Vu (Anh/Em) - Senior Compensation Analyst - Hung is responsible for managing the majority of the classification and compensation requests for staff and managers on campus and has been with 91 and UP for seven months. Something you may not know about Hung is that anh/em has a green thumb. Outside of work Hung likes spending time with family, and enjoys driving on unpaved roads and roads less traveled.

In the spring of 2023, the Title IX and Gender Equity Office and the Office for Equal Opportunity (OEO) will be offering a joint educational session on the university’s policies against protected status discrimination and harassment. During the session they will also cover important information on Responsible Employees (e.g., who is a Responsible Employee and how a Responsible Employee can respond to a disclosure of sexual harassment, sexual assault and/or complaints of discrimination). Raising awareness around these issues is an integral part of our efforts to promote equity on campus. We encourage you to request this important training for your department.
