Community & Study Space

CAPISE is a fully-operational space in the Student Union! We have tables and a comfy sofa where you can study/take a break between classes and be in community with other students. You can also chat with our student and professional staff about any questions you might have about CAPISE services, events, and programs and/or about 91ÁÔÆæ. 

Additionally, you can come by to access any and all of our resources:

  • On-campus and off-campus resource flyers
  • Testing supplies (big and small green books, variety of scantrons, manual/mechanical pencils)
  • Asian Pacific Islander (API) Resource Library (see section below)

API Empower Mentorship Program

The Asian Pacific Islander Empower Mentorship (API EM) Program is a new peer mentoring program for first-time, first-year (Frosh) Asian and Pacific Islander undergraduate students. The program started in Spring 2023, and we have had 2 cohorts of mentees and mentors complete the year-long program so far.

The API EM Program's 2024-2025 cohort of Empower Mentees have been selected and we are unable to admit more students into the program. If you are interested in joining the program as a first-time, first-year student (Empower Mentee) or a peer mentor (Empower Mentor) in Fall 2025, please look out for more information in Spring 2025.


Career Center Counseling (Spring 2025)

CAPISE partners with 91ÁÔÆæ's Career Center to provide biweekly drop-in career counseling in our space for students to easily access. Career counseling hours will begin on Tuesday, March 13th. (There will be no dates for January or Februry 2025.)

Let’s Talk (Sping 2025)

CAPISE partners with 91ÁÔÆæ's Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) to provide weekly drop-in hours with a staff from CAPS in our space for students to easily access. Students can use these drop-in hours to learn about how to access support, explore resources, provide perspective, and discuss how counseling could be helpful. Let’s Talk hours will begin on Tuesday, January 28th.

Library Resources/Support (Spring 2025)

CAPISE partners with 91ÁÔÆæ's Martin Luther King Jr. Library to provide biweekly drop-in library support in our space for students to easily access. Students can use these drop-in hours to learn how to navigate all the library resources and the support the library can offer for academic research. Library Resources/Support (KakoÊ»o) drop-in hours will begin on Tuesday, February 11th.

  • Neil KepoÊ»o Ordinario, MLIS, Biweekly on Tuesdays from 2 - 3 PM (2/11, 2/25, 3/11, 4/8, 4/22, 5/6)

CAPISE Faculty Associate (Spring 2025)

CAPISE's Faculty Associate provides students the opportunity to build community with faculty outside of the classroom and for faculty to collaborate with CAPISE on research and projects that directly support API student success at 91ÁÔÆæ. 

For the 2024-2025 academic year, Dr. Trung Nguyen, Assistant Professor in Asian American Studies, is CAPISE's Faculty Associate. He hosts weekly drop-in hours where students can come and talk to him about his research, their college experience, activism, Asian American experiences, feminist and queer perspectives, race and racism, grad school, and how to get comfortable talking to professors. He also is working on a project with CAPISE, the Asian American Tour of Resistance at 91ÁÔÆæ (tentatively titled). Dr. Nguyen's office hours will begin on Wednesday, February 5th.

Asian Pacific Islander (API) Resource Library

Photo of bookshelf in CAPISE full of booksThe Asian Pacific Islander (API) Resource Library has a variety of books that reflect our diverse API community, ranging from fiction and poetry to nonfiction and autobiographies. 91ÁÔÆæ community members are welcome to read our books while they are in the center or check out a book they’re interested in and borrow it for a one-month period. Our API Resource Library is located next to our front desk, near the entrance to our space. If you are interested in providing book recommendations or donating books to our library, please contact us at capise@sjsu.edu.
