Hi! Our advisors are here to help you figure out where you are now, and help you plan ways to go from here. It's your academic journey, and we're here just to make sure you reach the goals you want to reach. If you aren't sure what your goals should be, we're here to help you figure those out too! Remember these things in preparing for your advising appointment.We're all humans (yes, even our advisors)

We are absolutely committed to making sure that you find success in everything that you want to pursue in school. Your success is our mission, and we are on your side! We'll be with you every step of the way to make sure that you get to where you need to go, even through the detours and road bumps, if you want us to.Our advisors can assist you with everything outside your major.This includes but is not limited to general university graduation requirements like GE, transferring credit, transferring to another school. If you have a major-specific question "(can I take (this class) instead of (this class)," or "should I take (this class) for my major." you'll want to ask your major advisor.Help Us Help You!There's a lot of circumstances that can affect your plans outside of school. If you think there's some information that can help us help you, let your advisor know!Have Your Advising Documents Available!Transcripts (if you took classes from other places)AP/IP/CLEP/IB ScoresPrior documentation, and who you contacted previously (if necessary)Anything else you think might be important or relevant (always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!)Think of Questions You Want to Ask!To talk to our advisors, you obviously had a question about something, wanted to know more about something, or wanted to plan for the future. Feel free to ask any and all questions relating to academics because you never know when a question you asked might be absolutely critical to your situation.

- What If I'm Late?

We have various tardy grace periods depending on your appointment type. Express GE Appointments (15 minutes) have a 5 minute grace period. Regular appointments (30 minutes) have a 10 minute grace period. If you have not entered the in-person/Zoom meeting within the grace period, you'll be marked as a no-show and will need to reschedule.Example: If your appointment starts at 10:30 AM, you'll have until 10:40 AM to hop into the Zoom room. If you have not entered the Zoom room by 10:41 AM, you'll be marked as a no-show.

- What If I Miss My Appointment?

We have a 120-day, 3-time no-show policy. If you have been marked as a no-show for three separate appointments within any 120 day period, you will not be able to schedule appointments via Spartan Connect. You will need to contact the HASSC via email, phone, or in-person to schedule an appointment.You can also submit your question through your respective advising intake form:

How are appointments done?
Appointments can be virtual with Zoom or in-person. If Zoom is not available to you, you'll be receiving a confirmation email with the advisor's name. Contact the advisor directly for alternative solutions.
Can I choose which advisor I meet with?
At this time, no. Any advisor in the HASSC can assist you with any questions you might have in regards to general university requirements.
I can't come to my appointment! What do I do?
You'll receive a confirmation email with the advisor that you'll be meeting with. Contact the HASSC advisor directly.
I'm having problems scheduling an appointment. What do I do?
Email ha-successcenter@sjsu.edu with a screenshot of the issue and briefly describe what you did to bring up the error.
What Information Should I Have Ready?
Make sure to have access to a copy of any and all advising documents that might be relevant to the reason of your appointment. Digital copies are fine, as long as they're current. Your advisor has access to your transcript and transfer credit that you see on My91ÁÔÆæ, so if you don't see something you think you should be seeing, bring that up to your advisor.

Advising Drop-Ins

Drop-ins are 15 minute sessions for quick questions.
- Where do I need to go for drop-ins?
- Drop ins are currently not being offered check back on our academic advising page for updates.
- What can not be discussed during drop-ins?

Topics that can not be covered during drops-ins include: Change of Major/Adding a Minor, Course Late Drop, Semester Withdrawal, Choosing a Major/Minor, Grad Planning, Roadmap planning over one semester, Academic Notice (Probation), Disqualification/Reinstatement, Transfer Credit Equivalency, and Former Student Returning. This is because the above topics take more than 15 minutes to go over, and these are express appointments.

- Drop-ins is open, but I can't join?
- There are times when drop-in will closed earlier than expected due to a high volume of students and the amount we can serve per session. We do recommend checking back during drop-in times as we do reopen if we are able to serve more students.
