Beethoven Publications

Since 1986, the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San Jose State University has published a regular periodical devoted to Beethoven that includes substantial essays, reviews of new books, scores, recordings, and auction reports.

From 1986 until 1994, the publication was titled The Beethoven Newsletter. In 1995, beginning with Vol. 10, the title was changed to The Beethoven Journal.

2020 marks the relaunch of the center’s periodical as two separate publications:

  • The Beethoven Newsletter is published twice a year, beginning with Summer 2020.
  • The Beethoven Journal is available online, via an open-access format, hosted by 91ÁÔÆæ’s .

The Beethoven Journal

Volume 34 No. 2 (Winter 2019) was the last printed version of The Beethoven Journal.

In 2021 The Beethoven Journal was relaunched in an open-access peer-reviewed format hosted by 91ÁÔÆæ Scholarworks: . The Beethoven Journal welcomes submissions of articles on all aspects of Beethoven scholarship, including the many diverse approaches that the field now encompasses. The open-access format means that the content is available online to Beethoven scholars and enthusiasts around the world, free of charge.


The Beethoven Newsletter

The Beethoven Newsletter is intended for everyone interested in Beethoven and his music – from university professors and performers to devoted amateurs and music lovers. The newsletter contains reports, reviews, and shorter scholarly articles, and is published twice a year in summer and winter.

The Beethoven Newsletter is a print-only publication. You can subscribe to the newsletter by becoming a member of the .

To subscribe to The Beethoven Newsletter, join the . The subscription is included in the cost of membership.

We are no longer accepting separate subscriptions for The Beethoven Journal, since starting in 2021 this will be available online in an open-access format.

Online access to past issues of The Beethoven Journal is currently available through the subscription database ProQuest.
