Department History

The Biomedical Engineering Department was officially established as an independent department on July 1, 2018.

Development of the BS and MS degree programs began in 2006, with the following major milestones:

2007 Concentration in Biomedical Devices within the M.S. General Engineering program
2007 Undergraduate Minor in Bioengineering
2008 Concentration in Bioengineering within the B.S. General Engineering program
2010 B.S. and M.S. Biomedical Engineering Programs Approved by 91ÁÔÆæ
2011 CSU Chancellor Approves B.S. and M.S. Biomedical Engineering Degree Programs
2012 First B.S. BME Graduate (May)
2012 First Dedicated BME Faculty Joins the Program (August)
2013-2014 Two New BME Faculty Join the Program
2015 ABET Accreditation Visit; B.S. Biomedical Engineering Degree Program Accredited, effective Oct 14 through Sept 2018
2013-2017 Faculty Strength Grows to Five — Two More New BME Faculty Join the Program
2017 New Suite of BME Offices and Dedicated BME Labs Completed
2017 ABET Accreditation Visit (September)
2018 Guna Selvaduray Appointed Chair of the New Biomedical Engineering Department
2018 Student Population Grows to 340 Undergraduates and 110 Graduate Students
