Academic Programs

• Certificate in Advanced Global Leadership (Global Leadership Advancement Center)

  • This three-class certificate program is taught by innovative master teachers with diverse global backgrounds and select guest speakers. Together, they ensure the right mix of theory and practice. Classes are open to graduate students and working professionals who hold a four-year degree from an accredited U.S. college or university. • CHAD 60 - Child Development (Center for Community Learning & Leadership)

  • This service learning course is a popular lower division General Education course about the physiology of hunger/malnutrition on human development and health; political, social, cultural and gender factors that contribute to world hunger; scientific/technological foundation to population research and food production and their effect on the environment. • COMM 80 - Communication Workshop (Communication Center)
  • This one-unit course is a flexible, credit/no credit opportunity to enrich and enhance your oral and written communication skills! Designed to enhance students鈥� personal and professional communication and public speaking skills, this flexible student-directed course requires completion of instructional modules and workshops. • Educational Leadership Ed.D. (Lurie College of Education)

  • This Doctorate program is designed to admit candidates who meet the academic requirements for rigorous doctoral study and who possess personal qualities and professional experiences that suggest a strong potential for success both as doctoral students and as educational leaders. Tomorrow鈥檚 leaders will be those who thrive in a diverse, complex, technologically advanced world, and this curriculum focuses on real-life case learning and engages in rigorous inquiry in core areas needed for leadership success in efforts to reform schools, engage communities and increase student achievement. • Emancipatory School Leadership MA (Lurie College of Education)

  • This Master's program is designed for emerging K-12 school leaders who wish to engage with emancipatory leadership practices to improve educational opportunities for historically marginalized students. Emancipatory school leadership approaches create organizational cultures to reflect the diversity of experience and knowledge within school communities through collaborative approaches to deconstruct power systems, challenge inequitable practices and policies, and cultivate community cultural wealth. • ENGR 160SL - Engineering Projects in Community Service (Center for Community Learning & Leadership)

  • EPICS is a service learning course where upper division engineering students work in multidisciplinary teams to undertake community identified engineering projects. Students gain insight into design and development processes and perform and report upon tasks consistent with their level of discipline expertise. • Global Leadership & Innovation Minor (Lucas College and Graduate School of Business)

  • This interdisciplinary 15-credit minor program provides a comprehensive, yet flexible, curriculum that includes theory, skill development, and practical application. No other university offers a minor that combines global leadership and innovation, and 91猎奇 is the only university with a global leadership course that functions like the assessment centers found in industry via diagnosis and extensive personalized feedback on their global skills. • NUFS 139 - Hunger and Environmental Nutrition (Center for Community Learning & Leadership)

• PADM 281 - Public Administration Internship (Political Science/Public Administration)

  • The Public Administration Internship is intended for new professionals and those making a career change into public, higher education or non-profit service. This experience is intended to contribute to students鈥� academic, professional, and personal development while giving students an opportunity to apply what they鈥檝e learned in class, inform their coursework with real鈥恮orld professional experiences, and reflect upon and refine their career plans. • POLS 181/C - Political Science Internship Program/ Capstone (Department of Political Science)

  • The Political Science Department encourages students to pursue an internship during their course of study. Our internship program allows students to build professional skills outside the classroom while gaining first-hand experience with elected officials, government agencies at the local, state, and federal level, and a variety of other non-profit organizations and political campaigns. • UNVS 101 - Braven Leadership and Career Accelerator Course (Office of Undergraduate Education)
  • The is a vibrant learning experience every semester that gives you the roadmap and tools to channel your ambition and hard work. You鈥檒l work with a professional Leadership Coach, and a cohort of peers as you partake in activities that build your leadership and career readiness. Students will learn how to leverage their life story as a career asset, hone competencies sought by today鈥檚 top employers, and grow their network on campus and professionally. • Annual Student Leadership Gala (Student Affairs)

  • Each May, the campus community gathers to celebrate student leadership across campus at the Annual Student Leadership Gala. This event honors the recipients of the Vice President for Student Affairs Award for Exemplary Leadership and Service, all of the Student Organization Awards, the A.S. 55 Awards, and the Leadership and Career Certificate, as well as the Solidarity Network Recognition and the Associated Students Board of Directors Recognition. • Celebration of Black Excellence (Black Leadership and Opportunity Center)

  • This program is in it's second year, and is designed to acknowledge and recognize the accomplishments of Black/African American students, both academically and as student leaders at San Jose State University. The program also recognizes the accomplishments of Faculty, Staff, and individuals in the community who have played an integral part in the success of Black/African American students and the Black Leadership and Opportunity Center (The BLOC). • Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards (Student Involvement)

• Recognized Student Organization Awards (Student Involvement)

  • The RSO Awards take place at the Annual Student Leadership Gala each Spring semester. This is an opportunity for our campus to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our vibrant student organization community. There are more than a dozen different RSO Awards distributed each year in various categories.   • All students are welcome to join the Career Center for our upcoming workshops, including the Rock Your Resume and Job Fair Success. Learn how to create, update and tailor your resume, how to make the most of your time during employer connection events, and much more! • Career Workshops (International Student and Scholar Services)
  • 91猎奇 International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is pleased to partner with the Career Center on our Career Workshop Series, which was designed specifically with international students in mind. Previous topics have included preparing for job fairs, strategies for job search success, and more.
• Communication Tutoring Services (Communication Center)
  • Are you a student seeking help with a speech, essay, or presentation? Stop by the Center or to meet with one of our talented Speech Coaches or Writing Consultants. • Garden Fellowship Program (C茅sar E. Ch谩vez Community Action Center)
  • The offers students an opportunity to dive into the topic of environmental justice through the lens of scholarship, intersectionality, and practicality. Throughout this program, students will learn and network with experts in the environmental justice movements. Additionally, students will receive hands-on experience on how to include environmental justice practices in their everyday lives through learning basic gardening and environmental justice skills at the Campus Community Garden. • Leadership and Career Certificate Program (Student Involvement and Career Center)
  • The Leadership and Career Certificate Program (LCCP) is a unique opportunity that helps prepare students to be effective, inclusive, and successful leaders on campus and beyond. Participants engage with a variety of topics and activities through the semester at their own pace, navigating a few modules of content that include articles, videos, worksheets, events, and reflections. • National Society of Leadership and Success  (Student Involvement)
  • The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is the largest leadership honor society in the United States. The NSLS leadership program takes place each semester and teaches the interpersonal skills that employers seek to give you an edge in the job market. Members have access to more than $400,000 in scholarships, an exclusive NSLS job board, a personalized letter of recommendation, and more. • Run for Student Government (Associated Students)

  • Associated Students at 91猎奇 has been a student-owned and operated non-profit organization for over 100 years, and the leadership is elected each Spring semester. The Associated Students (A.S.) Board of Directors represent the student body as their governing council, and they are the voice of 91猎奇 students and advocate on their behalf on campus, statewide and national issues affecting them. • Spartan Leadership and Career Conference (Student Involvement and Career Center)
  • This full-day Conference is an event designed to help 91猎奇 students learn to refine their leadership skills and understand how to leverage those skills into a successful career. Featuring alumni and employer panels, breakout sessions led by 91猎奇 faculty, staff, and alumni, a networking session, and much more! The Fall 2021 Conference will be held on Friday, October 22nd. • Student Organization Leader Training (Student Involvement)
  • Members of our Recognized Student Organizations who hold formal leadership positions such as President or Treasurer will complete an online Canvas course. This training experience also acts as a forum for student leaders to be able to interact with each other. Throughout the academic year, this online platform will house a variety of supplemental workshops designed to promote the success and effectiveness of Recognized Student Organizations and their leaders, such as Conflict Management, Communication Strategies, Event Planning, and many more. • ESSC Peer Mentorship Program (Davidson College of Engineering)

  • This mentorship program aims to help new graduate students in their educational journey by being matched with an experienced graduate student to promote personal, career, social, and academic engagement. The mentorship relationship can be a mutually beneficial one with both students learning more about each other, our campus resources, and its academic and professional opportunities. This unpaid, volunteer initiative is supported by the Engineering Student Success Center via a Mentorship Team of ESSC advisors and includes an initial orientation for mentors as well as bi-monthly check-ins between advisors and mentors.

• Global Ambassador Program (Study Abroad and Away)
  • The is a volunteer opportunity for alumni from SAA programs to reflect on their experiences and provide insights and information to peers about study abroad and away options. Global Ambassadors work with the Study Abroad & Away Office to promote programs through marketing and outreach efforts, as well as share their stories and advice by providing resources for future study abroad/away students.   • iSucceed is a peer mentor program[BROKEN LINK] exclusively for 91猎奇 international students, designed to help them navigate arrival and campus life through their first year at San Jose State University. New international students will be paired with a Peer Mentor, a fellow Global Spartan who will provide guidance as they begin their 91猎奇 experience. • Peer Leaders (Lucas College and Graduate School of Business)

  • Why navigate 91猎奇 alone when a Peer Mentor can help? Peers in PRIDE is a free mentorship program designed to bridge the gap for incoming LGBTQI students. • Sankofa Black Spartan Professional Mentoring Program (Black Leadership and Opportunity Center)

• Student Ambassador Group (Lurie College of Education)

  • Student Ambassadors in the College of Education are dedicated to welcoming new and prospective students, creating a strong college community, and exploring pre-professional networking opportunities. • SESP Peer Mentor (Student Outreach and Recruitment)

  • The SESP Peer Mentors are a vital part of the transition component of the Spartan East Side Promise Program. SESP Peer Mentors will actively check-in with currently enrolled East Side Union High School District alumni, and participate in the implementation of programming for this cohort, such as creating and facilitating workshops, networking with various campus departments on a regular basis, and guiding students through our 10-step Growth Pledge.   • Do you need an insider to help you explore a career field or industry? Access 91猎奇虏 Quick Connections to view profiles of alumni and other industry professional mentors from a diverse range of fields who can help you achieve career success. Quick Connections are short, 15-30 minute, one-time career conversations (informational interviews) between an 91猎奇 student and a mentor (faculty/staff, alumni, or other industry professional). • Bay Area Retail Leadership Center (Lucas College and Graduate School of Business)

  • Bay Area Retail Leadership Institute (BARC) was created to build a vital partnership between 91猎奇 students and the retail industry. These resources are designed to lessen the discrepancy between career opportunity realities of the retailing industry and students鈥� understanding of those opportunities. • Engineering GO Program (Davidson College of Engineering)

  • The GO Program encourages students to take an active role in preparing for their engineering careers. Students earn points by participating in career-preparedness activities inside and outside of the College, on and off campus, and is available to all engineering students. • Panetta Institute Congressional Internship Program (College of Social Sciences)

  • A scholarship for a fully-funded fall-semester internship in Washington is available to 91猎奇 students through the Panetta Institute. Student leaders with a strong academic record and a commitment to public service may apply. Selected California students receive an intensive two-week training course on the workings of the U.S. Congress, then go to Washington, expenses paid, for 11 weeks of service to a California member of the U.S. House of Representatives. • Sacramento Semester Internship Program (Department of Political Science)

  • 91猎奇 students are eligible to spend the spring semester in the state capitol interning with a member of the California State Legislature, an executive branch agency, or a lobbying firm through Sacramento State's Sacramento Semester Program. • Washington DC Congressional Summer Internship Program (Department of Political Science)

  • The Everett, Nancy, and Phyllis Ward Washington DC Internship is administered by the Political Science Department to create congressional internship opportunities for two students to spend six to eight weeks over summer in Washington, DC. The summer stipend of $4,300 helps pay for housing, travel, and living expenses. Please contact Garrick.percival@sjsu.edu if you have any questions.

  • The Leadership and Management Program has posted of their Day in the Life of a Leader series, which are viewable to the public. Students can explore these recordings to hear engaging stories from leaders about their leadership journeys, different approaches and styles of leadership, and more. • Digital Leadership Resources (Student Involvement)

  • All students can access digital resources and recordings for previous Student Involvement workshops and events in a Google Classroom hub. We have leadership workshops, employer and alumni panels, student presentations, and more resources for viewing at your convenience.

• Emancipatory Education Speaker Series (Lurie College of Education)

  • This series of live, online conversations with nationally recognized speakers and emerging voices is a great resource to explore critical leadership topics. With many looking forward to a time when we can go back to 鈥渘ormal,鈥� we must remember how "normal" wasn't working for too many of our children, youth, families and communities. • Global Leadership Research and Publications (Global Leadership Advancement Center)

  • GLAC promotes cutting edge research to advance the field of global leadership, and this page is a repository for research and teaching materials with a wide range of online books and publications as well as postings regarding research awards and events. For example, the Global Leadership Bibliography is a master reading list of more than 150 articles and books by researchers and professionals from around the globe, including many by 91猎奇 scholars. • Women in Engineering Conference Recordings (Women in Engineering)

  • Women in Engineering[BROKEN LINK] @ 91猎奇 aims to design and host high-impact programs that connect future women innovators from campus with leading professionals in Silicon Valley. Students can view recordings of previous Conference session recordings, including topics such as leadership journeys, climate and energy, advice to students, and much more. • Business Innovation and Leadership Development (University Housing Services)

  • BUILD is a living community in University Housing open to first-year students who have been admitted or are considering a business major or minor. BUILD offers engaging leadership activities and interactive programs, provides access to business-related resources, and offers networking opportunities to new students transitioning to the university. • Chicanx Latinx Student Leadership Retreat (Chicanx Latinx Student Success Center)

• I Can/I Will (EOP)

  • This First-Year Experience Program focused on increasing the retention and graduation rates of African-American and Latino males in the Educational Opportunity Program at San Jose State University. Participants are empowered through meticulously designed weekly meetings with trained peer mentors who provide motivation, accountability, a process for engagement with the campus, assistance in developing a "road map to college," and a sense of community.   • Fraternity and Sorority organizations provide a strong sense of community and a variety of leadership development experiences for collegiate members. • Leadership Today Retreat (Mosaic and Student Involvement)

  • Leadership Today (LT) is a 3-day, 2-night immersion retreat focused on diversity, social justice, and cross-cultural communication. Program activities include interactive workshops, large and small group discussions, and various activities on intergroup relations, diversity, and leadership development. • Live at the I-House (91猎奇 International House)

  • Any 91猎奇 student can apply to live at , and residents are members of the International House Student Council and many hold leadership positions. There are also opportunities to participate in intramural sports, cross-cultural workshops, Coffee Nights and more. • New Black Spartan Institute (Black Leadership and Opportunity Center)

  • This program is designed to prepare incoming Black Spartans to 91猎奇 by connecting them with the larger Black Spartan community as well as resources from various campus departments. Students will apply Black/African American centered content knowledge to understand contemporary issues applicable to the collegiate experience. • Panhellenic Council Primary Recruitment

• Veterans Embracing Transition Project (Center for Community Learning & Leadership)

  • The Veterans Embracing Transition (VET) works to assess and address the needs of military veterans at 91猎奇. Programs include the Warriors at Home class, an academic course focused on transitioning from military to civilian life, research opportunities, a small lending library in CL 203, and varied educational outreach events. VET Connect Peer Leaders receive stipends to serve the student veteran community and to educate others about the needs, strengths, and experiences of veteran and military students.   • Weeks of Welcome (WOW) programs and events take place during the first few weeks of each semester. • Peer Career Advisor (Career Center)
  • Peer Career Advisors (PCA) help with the delivery of career services to students, alumni, staff, faculty and employers. Under the direct supervision of the PCA Lead, the PCA will assist in providing administrative, customer service, and outreach support in a busy office environment. PCAs are expected to exhibit the highest level of professionalism and leadership in their customer service. The positions will be posted on when available. • Peer Educator Position (Peer Connections)
  • Join our growing team of peer educators to gain leadership skills, support other students, and work a flexible campus job.  Every semester, Peer Connections accepts applications for Peer Educator positions, including the roles of Peer Mentor, Peer Tutor (classic and embedded), Supplemental Instruction leader, Learning Assistants, and Peer Advisors. Students receive training in their first semester, ongoing personal and professional development, and are part of a community of over 100 peer educators. • Outdoor Adventures and Climbing Wall Staff (Spartan Recreation)
  • The are responsible for ensuring the safety (physical and psychological) of all of our participants at the climbing wall and on our wilderness outings. Even if you're not interested in pursuing a career in the outdoor industry, all of our positions place a heavy emphasis on leadership and group dynamics that will translate into any workplace including: fostering an inclusive and welcoming community, facilitating challenging conversations, leading/teaching groups of student participants, and enforcing university policies. Trainings

• "A Thousand Stars" (Counseling and Psychological Services)

  • A Thousand Stars is a suicide awareness and prevention training, and a component of San Jos茅 State University's Suicide Prevention and Resilience Network. This up-to-date and multiculturally-informed training on suicide awareness provides education and skills to 91猎奇 student volunteers (who become 鈥淪tars鈥�) in order to help provide fellow students and community members in distress with vital resources. • Mental Health First Aid for Youth (Counseling and Psychological Services)

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. • Mental Health First Aid Training (Counseling and Psychological Services)

  • MHFA is a 8-hour training course designed to teach individuals (trainers) methods for assisting someone who may be in the early stages of developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The course provides useful information on how to assist individuals who have a history of mental disorders, longer-term mental health problems, or help identify those developing serious mental health difficulties.   • The Spartan Food Pantry is a walk-in, full-service, staffed, food assistance program offering non-perishable goods, fresh produce, and refrigerated items to eligible students.
