How to Apply

application process

Applying to the 91 School of Music as a music major is a multi-step process:

  1. Apply to 91 via before the application deadlines:
    1. Freshman application deadlines
    2. Transfer application deadlines
    3. Graduate application deadlines
  2. Fill out the located on the JOIN page.
  3. Respond to the email, text and phone calls you will receive from the School of Music in late December/early January about auditions.
  4. Audition for the School. On-campus audition dates vary year to year. We also accept video audition submissions, but it is recommended to participate in an on-campus audition if possible. Go to our Audition Information page to view the dates and deadlines for this academic year. Put them in your calendar now!
  5. Select "Intend to Enroll" after you receive your audition results! (Go to and follow the instructions)

Undergraduate

Apply to 91

  • Applicants must for admission to San José State University.
  • About 7-10 business days after applying at Cal State Apply, you will receive an email with your nine-digit 91 ID included.
    • This nine-digit number will be your primary university identification throughout your career at 91. (Make sure the spam filters on your email account are set to accept email from @sjsu.edu so you receive this email).
  • Click on the “sign in” link and enter your nine-digit 91 ID and the password you created. Then, search for “My91” in the search box. Make sure to mark My91 as a favorite and then click on the “My91” tile to access your student center. Your My91 account is the primary source of information about your application. Make sure your personal information is current—your email address is critical!

Deadlines

Audition for the School of Music 

Once you have applied via , the School of Music will be notified about your application. You will then be contacted by faculty, staff or students about audition information. It is important to respond to any emails, texts or calls so we can best assist you in the audition process.

In order to be accepted as a music major, students who have applied to 91 must complete a successful audition for the School of Music. Audition information can be found on the Entrance Audition page, and repertoire suggestions can be found on Suggested Musical Repertoire page.

Graduate

All required transcripts and supporting documents must be sent directly to the University.

Apply at . Payment of the CSU Application Fee of $70 will be accepted by credit card or paypal only. The payment must be made in order to submit your Cal State Apply university application.

Admission to the School of Music 

The School of Music additionally requires:

  • Three letters of recommendation sent directly to the area coordinators of your area of interest.
  • An audition, submission of a portfolio of work, and/or interview (depending on the area requirements) with the applicable area coordinator.

The School of Music does not require the GRE.

Three-Summer Master's Program in Music Education

Prospective students apply online to the both San José State University and the School of Music through . Please state your proposed area of emphasis as music education/three summer master's, and complete the personal statement. All required transcripts and supporting documents must be sent directly to the University.
