Scholarships
- Carla and Mario Federici Scholarship
-
To provide a scholarship to a student in the Department of World Languages and Literatures. Applicants must be full-time students in the Foreign Languages Department.
Preference will be given to applicants in the following order:
- Graduate students in French MA program;
- Graduate students in the Spanish MA program;
- At the discretion of the review committee, outstanding undergraduate students with a minor in Italian may be given consideration.
Students in the graduate program must have a 3.5 GPA. Students in the undergraduate program must have a 3.0 GPA. All other factors being equal, students who face hardship in pursuing their university education will be given preference.

- Donna J. Gustafson World Languages Scholarship

To provide scholarships for master's level students studying Spanish and/or French.

- Esther Pereya-Suarez Scholarship

Spanish and French majors. Must be matriculated and have an overall GPA of 3.5. Preference given to students pursuing graduate degree.

- Juan Sempere Scholarship Fund

To provide scholarships for graduate students in Spanish who intend to pursure a career in interpretation.

To be used for undergraduate scholarships, support of prospective foreign language teachers, graduate fellowships, and equipment for foreign language media center. Criteria for Scholarship: Applicants will be nominated and selected by faculty in the Foreign Language Department. Applicants must be at least half-time, fully-matriculated students. Distribution can also be used for purchases of equipment, books and other items needs for the Foreign Language Department. Any unexpended annual distributions will be returned to fund.
Requirements Checklist
Undergraduate (B.A. and Minor) Candidates
- I have declared a major or minor in a World Language program (must appear on unofficial transcript) by the time I am awarded the scholarship.
- I will have completed at least one semester of study in the 91ÁÔÆæ Dept. of World Languages and Literatures by the time I am awarded the scholarship.
- I am a World Language minor and will be enrolled in a minimum of 3 units of World Languages classes during the semester(s) I receive this award OR I am a World Language major and will be enrolled in at least 4 units of World Languages classes during the semester(s) I receive this award.
- I have an overall GPA of at least 3.00.
- I have at least a 3.50 GPA in my World Language major/minor coursework (Financial Aid Students) OR I have at least a 3.75 GPA in my World Language major/minor coursework (Merit only.)
- I can provide evidence of financial need from the 91ÁÔÆæ Office of Financial Aid OR evidence of exceptional merit (superior GPA, leadership in World Language clubs or honor society, student outreach or other World Language activities).
Graduate Students and Teacher Education Candidates
- I am admitted or enrolled in a graduate program in a World Language OR I am admitted or enrolled in a FLED credential program.
- I will have been admitted to the 91ÁÔÆæ Dept. of World Languages and Literatures by the time I apply for the scholarship.
- I will be enrolled in at least 4 units of World Language classes during the semester(s) I receive this award.
- I have attained at least 3.50 GPA in World Language coursework (Financial Aid Students) OR I have attained at least a 3.75 GPA in World Language coursework (Merit only.)
- I can provide evidence of financial need from the 91ÁÔÆæ Office of Financial Aid OR evidence of exceptional merit (superior GPA, leadership in World Language clubs or honor society, student outreach or other World Language activities).

- Paula Scholarship

To provide a scholarship to a deserving student who is a Spanish major and has taken a leadership role in the publication Chispa, the Circulo Hispanico, or similar activities. Applicants will be nominated and selected by a Review Committee consisting of two tenured professors of Spanish and two graduate students. Applicants must be fully matriculated students majoring in Spanish, upper-division or graduate students in the year they receive the grant and have at least a 3.0 GPA in Spanish.

- Roger Dean Schwalm Scholarship

The Roger Dean Schwalm Memorial Scholarship will be a permanent endowment to provide scholarships for students majoring in Japanese. Scholarship preference will be given to students participating in the study abroad program. If there are no students in the study abroad program awards should be given to students majoring in Japanese who demonstrate need. One award will be made annually. The scholarship is not renewable.
