General Education Requirements

The General Education (GE) requirements described on this page pertain to students currently enrolled at 91ÁÔÆæ.

California State University GE requirements will change in Fall 2025 to conform to California Assembly Bill 928, the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act, now known as Cal-GETC: California General Education Transfer Curriculum.

First time first-year students starting in Fall 2025 or later will be required to complete the new CSU GE Breadth Requirements. Most transfer students entering 91ÁÔÆæ in Fall 2025 or later will be placed into the new CSU GE Breadth Requirements.

Students are strongly encouraged to discuss their GE options with an advisor in their college's Student Success Center

San Jose State requires students to take at least 48 semester units of general education courses. (Multiply the semester unit requirement by 1.5 to calculate quarter-system unit requirements.)

Students are expected to complete the general education requirements in Areas A and B4 before enrolling in any upper division general education course.

Grade Requirements

  • All courses applied to GE requirements must be taken for a letter grade.
  • A grade of C- (1.7) or better is required for A.1 (Oral Communication), A.2 (Written Communication I), A.3 (Critical Thinking and Writing), B.4 (Mathematics), and F (Ethnic Studies).
  • All other GE courses require a grade of "D-" or higher to earn GE credit.
