Information for Transfer Students

During your Transfer Orientation, you will be able to attend an advising session offered by one of the department's major advisors. This is your opportunity to learn and ask questions about your major requirements.

Welcome to SISS at 91ÁÔÆæ!

Dear Spartan,

Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (we call it SISS) at San José State University! We are thrilled to have you be part of our community.

To assist you in planning out your schedule you can find degree roadmaps and guiding information on the different sociology concentrations here: General Sociology [pdf], Community Change Concentration [pdf], Race and Ethnic Studies Concentration [pdf], Social Interaction Concentration [pdf], Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Concentration [pdf]

A few other tips we like to share with new students include:

  • Complete the Upper Division Writing Directed Self Placement as soon as possible. This test will help you determine if you are eligible for 91ÁÔÆæ Studies Courses and SOCI 100W.
  • Take the major core classes as soon as possible. Most transfer students sign up for and complete SOCI 100W, SOCI 101, and SOCI 116 during their first year at 91ÁÔÆæ.
  • Space out your sociology classes. Most transfer students will only need to complete 33 units (11 classes) of sociology to earn their degrees so there is no need to overload your schedule with sociology classes.
  • Meet with advisors early and often. These folks can help you navigate 91ÁÔÆæ.

Starting college is an exciting transition in one’s life and the department, faculty and staff are here to assist you in your transition. In SISS you will find interesting classes, welcoming classmates, dedicated advisors, innovative faculty members, and a community that will partner with you to ensure your success.

If you have any questions you can visit the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences’ webpages for more information.

Once again, welcome and congratulations! We look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,

The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Faculty and Staff
