Required Transition Courses

Chemical Engineering (ChE) Required Transition Courses

Transition courses for ChE majors are required of all students without an undergraduate Chemical Engineering degree. A student does not need to take a transition course if they can show that they had a similar course as part of their undergraduate degree. Transition courses do not count towards the 30 units of your MS degree.

  • ChE 115 (Fall)  - 3
  • ChE 190 (Fall)  - 3
  • ChE 151 (Spring)  - 4
  • ChE 158 (Fall)  - 3
  • ChE 160A (Spring)  - 4
  • ChE 160B (Fall)  - 4

Note:

  • Students without a BS in Chemical Engineering need to have a BS in a related engineering or science discipline with at least one college level course each in calculus, differential equations, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics (mechanics).
  • Students must earn a C or better in each transition course and achieve a GPA of 3.0 or better in all their transition courses or will be disqualified from the ChE MS Program.
  • Graduate level courses can be taken at the same time as transition courses as long as the pre-requisite transition courses have been satisfactorily completed.
  • Incoming students with a BS Chemistry Degree and a GPA of 3.0 or above in their Chemistry courses can waive the ChE 115 requirement.

Materials Engineering (MatE) Required Transition Courses

Transition courses for MatE majors are required of all students without an undergraduate Materials Engineering degree. A student does not need to take a transition course if they can show that they had a similar course as part of their undergraduate degree. Transition courses do not count towards the 30 units of your MS degree.

Students without a BS in Materials Engineering need to have a BS in a related engineering or science discipline with at least one college level course each in calculus, differential equations, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics (mechanics).

  • MatE 115  - 3
  • MatE 152  - 3
  • MatE 195 - 3

Note:

  • You must get a C or better in every transition course and a GPA of 3.0 or better in all the transition courses.
  • Graduate level courses can be taken at the same time as some transition courses as long as the pre-requisite transition courses are met.
  • Organic chemistry is a required transition class for all students who have not yet had organic chemistry (including those with MatE BS).
