Types and details
Holds on your My91ΑΤΖζ account prevent you from registering for the next term, unless you have a hold removed by the department that placed it.
Always click the blue "Details" link in the "holds" section of your account and read the instructions to remove your hold.
"ESSC, please remove my hold."
Below are common holds placed by the College of Engineering and the ESSC. Removing the hold depends on the requirements set forth by the department. This means, not all holds can be removed by the ESSC.

You will receive an e-mail with instructions for making an appointment.
Students with this hold are likely taking ENGR 10 or has been assigned to work with a Student Academic Success Specialist advisor.

Engineering - Major Advising
(for students staying in the same major)

All students in the College of Engineering must meet with their major advisor Fall and Spring semesters. View your department's advising page for further instructions.
NOTE: If you are changing your major to one outside of the College of Engineering, please read this protocol to remove your Major Advising hold.
Biomedical (ESSC advisors can remove holds for BME students with 0-60 earned units)

Electrical (ESSC advisors can remove holds for EE students with 0-60 earned units)

Engineering - Major Advising
(for students changing their major)

If you are transitioning out of Engineering, you need to get advising from the success center housed in the major you want.
THEN, email success-engineering@sjsu.edu to let us know that you received help and are ready for your hold to be removed. We will check Spartan Connect to verify your meeting with an advisor and remove your Major Advising hold.
If you are already an engineering major, but want to change it to a different one within Engineering, please complete one of the following:
- Attend virtual Drop-in with an ESSC advisor. Please check our current virtual drop-in hours.
- Attend in-person drop-in advising at the ESSC Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-2:00 p.m.
- Attend a Change of Major workshop

Other holds from the Office of the Registrar may prevent you from enrolling or receiving your diploma.
The Open University Units hold restricts students who are disqualified from registering for classes until they have met with an advisor. Please see our Disqualification page for more details.
