Dear Faculty,
I am writing to invite you to submit an idea for a talk, lecture, workshop, entertainment/arts event, panel discussion, or other idea for the event here at 91ÁÔÆæ. This year's event takes place from November 1 - 15. The 2024 theme, "Empowering Democracy: Advancing Racial Justice and Equity in the 21st Century" seeks to highlight the election and the ever-changing socio-political climate nationally. This event welcomes programs in-person, virtual, and in multiple formats that highlight various topics that address the multi-faceted aspects of racial justice and equity. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Transforming Communities, it is an annual event hosted by 91ÁÔÆæ designed to foster connection with the broader San Jose community and change throughout our community towards a more racially just, and equitable campus, city, and county. More information can be found .
As a faculty member, you occupy a unique and powerful role within the university that can be leveraged in this movement towards racial justice. No matter your discipline and no matter your research focus, racial inequity impacts them all in some shape or form. By submitting to this event, you could be helping to improve equity within your field, connect your students to these important issues, and connect the broader campus and city community to your work and the work of your department. We always welcome faculty to include Transforming Communities programming into their syllabus.
While there are many demands on your time, this event offers you a really unique opportunity to connect research, teaching, and service all towards the goal of making our campus more just and equitable. We encourage creative proposals! Please consider submitting your work to this event and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to transformingcommunities@sjsu.edu.
We look forward to working with you and having your participation.
Sincerely,
Vincent J. Del Casino, Jr.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
