Canvas Course Visibility

To provide students with view access to a Canvas course, you can adjust the course visibility. The course can also get listed in the Canvas Course Index for students to easily locate.

• Steps to Adjust the Canvas Course Visibility

  • To adjust the visibility of a Canvas course, complete the following steps:

    1. Click on Settings on the lower left navigation menu of the course.
        
    2. On the Course Details tab, scroll down to the visibility section. 
    3. Adjust the setting from Course to Institution. This will allow access to view the course after logging in with 91ÁÔÆæOne credentials.
    4. (Optional) Further restrict the visibility to only provide access to the Syllabus page, using the Customize option. 
    5. Click the Update Course Details button.
• Steps to Include a Course in the Canvas Course Index

  • To include your course in the Canvas Public Course Index, complete the following steps. Note: Courses included in this index will only be visible to members of the 91ÁÔÆæ community logged in through One.91ÁÔÆæ:

    1. Click on Settings on the lower left navigation menu of the course. 
       
    2. On the Course Details tab, scroll down to the visibility section.
    3. Check the box labelled Include this course in the public course index.
    4. (Optional) Select your course format from the dropdown menu (on campus, online, blended)
    5. (Optional) Add your course description.
    6. Click the Update Course Details button.

  • To view the Canvas Course Index, complete the following steps:

    1. Click on Courses on the left navigation menu.
    2. Click on the All Courses link. 
    3. Click on the Browse More Courses Button.

• What is the default visibility setting for my Canvas courses?

  • Canvas courses are private and only visible to students enrolled in your course by default.

• What is the visibility difference between course, institution, and public?

  • The different visibility options include:

    1. Course: The course is available to all users associated (enrolled) in the course. This option is the default setting.‬
    2. Institution: The course is available to users associated with this institution. They will need to log in with 91ÁÔÆæOne credentials to view the course.
    3. Public: The course is available to anyone with the URL.

• What type of access does the course index provide?

  • The Canvas Course Index provides students with view access only. For example,they will be able to view the course syllabus and Zoom link, but cannot participate in activities, such as discussions.

• If I adjust this setting now, can I change it later?

  • Yes, you can adjust the course visibility for the first week or two of the semester and then change it back to the default setting afterward.
